Back-End Participation
Back-end participation is a share of a film revenue or profit that a participant receives after the film begins to recoup, rather than as an upfront fee.
Talent, producers, and sometimes financiers may take back-end participation in exchange for a lower fee upfront or as additional upside. Where a participant sits in the recoupment waterfall determines how likely and how large that payment is.
Back-end terms vary widely and are defined precisely in the deal documents. Because the amount depends on how a film performs, it is never a guaranteed sum. Review any participation terms with your own advisors.
